Every society answers three questions

At the core of any economic and political system lie three fundamental questions. How a society answers them defines its character.

Question one

What to produce?

Which goods and services should be made? How much? Who decides — consumers, the state, or tradition?

Question two

How to produce it?

Which resources and methods? Who owns the means of production — private owners, workers, or the state?

Question three

For whom?

How is output distributed? By wages, need, birth, merit, prices, or government allocation?

A note on neutrality

This site presents information about political and economic systems as clearly and fairly as possible. The goal is education, not advocacy. Every system covered here has genuine strengths and genuine failures — both are presented. No system is beyond critique; no system is beyond understanding.
